STUBBARD

Back to index

Early Dual Purpose Cider Apple

Origin and distribution

An ancient variety, once described as. ‘An easy and popular dessert for August.’, Stubbard occurs now as single trees, often in gardens.

General description

The knobbly pale yellow fruit has distinct ribs rising to a crowned and furrowed nose. The stem is long and thick and projects distinctly.

Season

Ready to use in early September.

Typical Juice

SG 1043, acidity 0.83%, tannin 0.17%

Cider

Our Stubbard cider sample made in 2007 was rated as ‘Rather woody tasting, sharp cider, lacking body but would be good for blending.’

As a very early maturing apple, Stubbard might be included in the first-early cider made in the season, when it would contribute useful sharpness and some sugar.
