Early Dual Purpose Apple

Origin and distribution

A popular and rather variable old variety dating from the 18th Century and hailing from Trent near Sherborne. Once called the ‘Cottage Apple’ it was found in many gardens and orchards in the West and still survives

General description

A large, broadly conical, rather knobbly and irregular apple, more or less covered with bright red stripes. Tends to rot quickly after it drops.

Season

From early September - October.

Typical Juice

Mild sharp. SG 1.052 , acidity 0.64%, tannin 0.13 g/l

Cider

Our 2007 cider we described as pale straw coloured, fresh, slightly piquant, light and sharp with a slightly metallic aftertaste.

A clean fresh cider good on its own but more useful blended.
